Using いいやな and よくない to be indirect?

I learned these in high school when I studied Japanese but haven't really heard them used in all three years of University study... do they just sound unnatural and awkward in most situations or are they used fairly commonly in Japan? It seems we use 悪い or other more direct words which seems counter-intuitive considering the usual indirectness of Japanese speech.
