How to effectively move from a note using the octave key to another note not using the octave key?

I am only a beginner on the saxophone as I got an alto sax only a short while ago. I am struggling however to go from a high D to a low B , for example, without continuing the high pitch in the following note...How can you overcome this? [it is even more difficult when slurring]
